An independent state in the 1940's, Trieste has a rich history influenced by the many surrounding powers in the Adriatic, Balkan region. A large port city, Trieste's architecture has been influenced by Italian, Yugoslavic, Habsburg, Venetian, Croatian, Serbian and many other cultures in the region.
