The region was once the seat of the house of York which played a main role in the 'War of the Roses'. It was also an important city in Northumbria with Viking and Saxon history before William's Conquest. York today maintains its place as a beautiful and important city in the British Isles and the northern seat of the English Church.
With many medieval landmarks such as the Shambles and Clifford's Tower, York is a must visit when travelling the UK.
